The first film featured will be The Watermelon Woman, a groundbreaking film by Cheryl Dunye that blends documentary and fiction. It follows a young Black lesbian filmmaker, Cheryl, as she explores the life of a mysterious African American actress from the 1930s, known only as the "Watermelon Woman." As Cheryl uncovers details about the actress's past, the film addresses themes of race, sexuality, and identity, while also challenging Hollywood's portrayal of Black women. It's a powerful exploration of intersectionality and representation in cinema.
